O Fio da Vida unfolds in Maçainhas, a Portuguese village where the cobertor de papa—a heavy, long-haired wool blanket—was once woven in nearly every household. Made through centuries-old techniques of soaking, felting, carding, and drying under the sun, it was more than a craft: it was a cultural anchor. When the looms fell silent and production ceased, the tradition nearly vanished.
Through the memories and hands of the artisans who refused to let it die, the film follows the revival of this rare heritage and the creation of the Association for the Genuine Cobertor de Papa of Maçainhas. Their stories—some beginning in childhood—reveal the deep emotional and familial ties woven into each blanket, as well as the urgency of protecting authenticity in a modern world of imitations.
As younger generations are invited to learn and the old factory’s sounds and smells return, O Fio da Vida becomes a meditation on identity, resilience, and the fragile threads that connect community and craft. It asks what is lost when a tradition fades—and who will keep weaving the future.
